Ronaldo heads Portugal into Euro 2012 semis

CRISTIANO Ronaldo edged a step closer to winning his first major piece of silverware with Portugal yesterday as he scored the only goal in the 1-0 win against the Czech Republic to reach the Euro 2012 semi-final.

The Real Madrid star broke the deadlock in the 79th minute at the National Stadium in Warsaw, finding space in the area from a Joao Moutinho cross to fire a fierce header past Petr Cech.

The goal was Ronaldo's third of the tournament and an indicator that Paulo Bento's Selecao were coming to the boil after an initial group stage defeat to Germany.

And striker Nani said after the match that the team could even go all the way.

"I think if we keep on doing what is necessary we can achieve anything. We have reached the semi-final. That's a dream and we will keep on working for our goal," he said.

Attention now switches to the so-called "Derby of Debt" between Germany and Greece in the Baltic port city of Gdansk, northern Poland, today, with an intensely political backdrop adding extra interest to the tie.
