Rooney awaits FA action over swearing
MANCHESTER United striker Wayne Rooney will learn today whether he faces disciplinary action from the English Football Association for swearing on television while celebrating a hat-trick.
Rooney has apologized for shouting an expletive into a camera after completing a 14-minute treble that inspired his team to come from two goals down to beat West Ham United 4-2 and go seven points clear at the top.
"Tomorrow there will be a decision," FA director of football development Trevor Brooking said yesterday when asked whether the governing body would be investigating Rooney's outburst.
"It was a surprise, having scored a hat-trick, to react that way. It is something we will have to look at."
United published a statement from Rooney on its website on Saturday.
"I want to apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my goal celebration, especially any parents or children that were watching," the 25-year-old said.
Rooney was mobbed by teammates as he celebrated his first hat-trick of what has been a troubled and below-par season before heading towards a television camera and yelling into it.
His behavior, rather than his three goals, dominated the back pages in British newspapers with The Sunday Times' main headline announcing "Red Devil Turns Air Blue" and The News of the World declaring "Rood Yob".
Also on Saturday, second-place Arsenal could only draw 0-0 with 10-man Blackburn Rovers and defending champion Chelsea needed Didier Drogba to equalize for a 1-1 draw at mid-table Stoke City.
Liverpool, which shares the record of 18 titles with United, lost 1-2 to a West Bromwich Albion side led by its former manager, Roy Hodgson, while Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of a second straight top-four finish were hit by a 0-0 draw at Wigan Athletic.
United has 66 points from 31 matches, ahead of Arsenal with 59 from 30 and Chelsea on 55 from 30.
Aston Villa drew 2-2 with Everton to stay deep in relegation trouble while Newcastle beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 and Birmingham City beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1.
