Rooney saves United, Reds slip

Wayne Rooney scored twice to help Manchester United stretch its unbeaten run to 12 games in an entertaining 2-2 English Premier League draw at Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool was upset 1-3 at Hull City yesterday.

Rooney twice levelled for United in a captivating game at White Hart Lane, showcasing his poacher’s instinct to cancel out Kyle Walker’s opener before firing home a penalty after a Sandro thunderbolt had put Tottenham back in front.

Champion United remained eighth on 22 points, nine behind leader Arsenal, with Tottenham a further point back.

Hull, which had never beaten Liverpool, opened the scoring at KC Stadium on 20 minutes thanks to a huge slice of good fortune, Jake Livermore’s shot from distance cannoning off the boot of Martin Skrtel and looping over goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool leveled thanks to a curling free kick from Steven Gerrard but its lackluster performance was punished in the second half when David Meyler latched on to a loose ball and buried it into the bottom corner. Skrtel deflected in a Tom Huddlestone shot with three minutes left to gift the points to Hull.

The victory united, at least temporarily, Hull owner Assem Allam and those fans of the club unhappy at his intention to change its official name from Hull City AFC to Hull Tigers. This has prompted chants of “City till we die” at home games from some Hull fans.

Liverpool dropped to third on 24 points, behind Chelsea, which hosted Southampton later, on goal difference.

Manchester City can also muscle into the top four with a win at home to Swansea City.

Hull moved up to 10th on 17 points.

Meanwhile, league struggler Fulham announced yesterday that Martin Jol had been sacked as its manager.

The London club has won just three out of 13 league games under the Dutchman this season, with only Sunderland and Crystal Palace below it in the table.

Fulham said former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen, who only recently arrived at Craven Cottage as a coach to work under Jol, would assume responsibility for the first team with “immediate effect”.
