Rutten gets the boot as Schalke coach

SCHALKE fired coach Fred Rutten on Thursday, putting an end to the Dutch trainer's stay after less than a season at the club. Schalke said that Rutten was fired "with immediate effect."

It said club president Josef Schnusenberg informed him of the decision in a "very businesslike and in part emotional" conversation. There was no immediate word on his successor. Schalke said the remaining coaching staff -- Mike Bueskens, Youri Mulder and Oliver Reck -- will lead team training for now. Schalke finished third last season but has struggled under Rutten. The club is eighth in the Bundesliga, 12 points off the lead, and has been eliminated from all other competitions.
