S. Korea submits bid to host World Cup

SOUTH Korea submitted its formal bid today to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022, an official said.

The Korea Football Association sent its application to FIFA, world soccer's governing body because it has "enthusiastic public support" to host the World Cup again, said association spokesman You Young-cheul.

FIFA is set to announce the host nations for both 2018 and 2022 in December next year.

"We successfully hosted the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and still has sufficient infrastructure" to host the World Cup again, You said. "We're also having enthusiastic public support for our bid."

In February, FIFA received 11 preliminary bids to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup. March 16 is the deadline for formal submissions of bids.

There were nine bids that registered an intention to bid by last month's cutoff. Along with South Korea, they were: Australia, England, Indonesia, Japan, Qatar, Mexico, Russia and the United States.

South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup and the 2014 event will be in Brazil.
