SIPG edges past R&F as Suning tops

SHANGHAI SIPG edged Guangzhou R&F 1-0 to clinch its second league victory, while Shanghai Greenland Shenhua fell 0-2 at leader Jiangsu Suning in the fifth round of the 2016 Chinese Super League over the weekend.

SIPG took on head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson’s former team on Friday. The team created several chances in the first half, though the goal didn’t come until 6 minutes from the end. Wu Lei’s shot was blocked by R&F goalie Cheng Yuelei but SIPG’s Brazilian striker Elkeson reacted fast enough to beat R&F’s Swedish midfielder Gustav Svensson to stab in the rebound.

The victory lifted SIPG to third in the standing on 8 points.

“To us, it was not a very well-played match,” conceded Eriksson. “R&F played a good match. They showed good skills and controlled the ball well, while my team looked a bit tired due to a busy schedule. It means we are not used to playing 2 matches in a week yet. However, to become a top class team, that’s the difficulty we have to overcome.”

The Swede praised his team for keeping three straight clean sheets. SIPG takes on Melbourne Victory tomorrow at Shanghai Stadium for their second meeting in the AFC Champions League. A draw will guarantee the hosts a spot in the next round.

First victory

Beijing Guo’an, meanwhile, finally notched its first victory of the season, easing the pressure on coach Alberto Zaccheroni. Beijing won 3-0 at Hangzhou Greentown to rise to 14th in the 16-team table on four points.

In a Saturday match, a brace from Jiangsu Suning captain Ren Hang sent Shenhua to its first defeat of the season. Both goals were headers and came in the last 6 minutes of the match.

“We all thought it could be a draw until the closing minutes,” Shenhua head coach Gregorio Manzano said. “Jiangsu invested big this year, and it’s normal for them to achieve results like this. But Lv Zheng and Li Qiuyun did well in marking Alex Teixeira on the right wing.”

Shenhua now sits 8th in the standing on 6 points. Suning surpassed defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande to top the table on 13 points. Evergrande is a point behind after beating Henan Jianye 2-1 on Friday.

Elsewhere in the CSL, it was: Shandong Luneng 3, Yanbian Fude 1; Liaoning Whowin 2, Tianjin Teda 2; Hebei China Fortune 1, Shijiazhuang Ever Bright 1; and Chongqing Lifan 1, Changchun Yatai 1.
