SHANGHAI SIPG fans went mountain climbing on the first day of the New Year to seek good fortune for their club in 2017.
The Chinese have a tradition of “climbing high” at the beginning of a year to achieve “high” scores in life and career. Over 70 SIPG fans climbed the Shilong Mountain near Yangshan Deep Water Port early on Sunday morning to watch the first sunrise of 2017.
It was also the Chinese Super League side’s first official fans’ gathering in 2017, which is organized on a monthly basis.
After getting Brazilian midfielder Oscar from Chelsea for a CSL record 60 million euros (US$62.8 million), Andre Villas-Boas’ team will be seeking success in 2017 -- in CSL, China FA Cup, and the Asian Champions League. The team is heading to Qatar for winter training on January 3. The season kicks off in March but the ACL qualifiers start next month.
