SIPG finishes third in CSL ahead of rival Shenhua

SHANGHAI SIPG and Greenland Shenhua finished third and fourth, respectively, as the Chinese Super League brought down the curtains on the 2016 season last night.

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s SIPG beat Manuel Pellegrini’s Hebei China Fortune 3-1 at Shanghai Stadium. Brazilian striker Hulk started for the hosts.

SIPG had a dream start as Hebei’s Turkey defender Ersan Gulum scored an own goal when dealing with a pass from SIPG’s Wu Lei four minutes after kick-off. Wu added another in the 35th. Hebei’s Dong Xuesheng and SIPG’s Elkeson each scored in the second half.

SIPG collected 52 points from 30 matches, 4 points more than city rival Shenhua, which lost 0-1 away to Changchun Yatai.

Changchun was aiming for victory in a bid to leave the relegation zone. It was third-to-last in the table, with a one-point advantage over second-last placed Hangzhou Greentown before the last round. Shenhua also had to face tough playing conditions, including a snow-covered pitch as the temperature fell to -4 degrees Celsius when the match kicked off at 7:30pm in the northern Jilin Province city.

Both Shanghai teams won spots in next year’s AFC Champions League, though Shenhua will have to go through an extra round of qualification ties.

CSL champion Guangzhou Evergrande, which claimed its sixth successive league title two rounds in advance, eased past Shandong Luneng 4-0 at home to top the table on 64 points. Its Brazil midfielder Goulart Pereira scored a brace to become the league’s top scorer with 19 goals. Jiangsu Suning lost 0-1 to Liaoning Whowin to finish as runner-up on 57 points.

Hangzhou and Shijiazhuang Ever Bright dropped down a division to League One.
