SIPG mum amid Oscar transfer rumors
SHANGHAI SIPG yesterday remained silent amid reports of a 52-million-pound (US$65.8 million) offer for Chelsea’s Oscar.
British media, include BBC, Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail, reported early yesterday that the Chinese Super League side had made the hard-to-decline offer for the 25-year-old midfielder, who has been struggling for playing time under new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.
If Chelsea accepts the big-money offer, Oscar will join his old acquaintance, former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas, as well as fellow Brazilians Hulk and Elkeson at SIPG.
Villas-Boas showed up briefly at the club’s year-end fans party held at its training camp in Qingpu District yesterday afternoon. The low-key Portuguese did not accept any interview request but gave a short speech to the 200 fans at the camp.
“From the way people approach me in the street, I can feel their passion,” said AVB. “CSL matches have high attendance, and I will feel our fans’ enthusiasm in the first match (of the new season).”
No foreign players were at the party, though SIPG confirmed earlier that Hulk and Elkeson would stay at the club.
Oscar had been a target of AVB when the Portuguese managed Tottenham Hotspur in the 2012-13 season. However, Oscar chose to join Premier League rival Chelsea, which incidentally had fired AVB during the 2011-2012 season.
It is not the first time Oscar has been linked to a CSL club. It was reported that he turned down an 57-million pound offer from big-spending Jiangsu Suning in February — the club signed his former Chelsea teammate Ramires for 28 million euros.
Oscar has not started a Premier League match since Chelsea’s 1-2 home defeat to Liverpool in September. If the deal is sealed, he will break compatriot David Liuz’s 50-million pound transfer record from Stanford Bridge to Paris Saint-Germain in 2014.
The current CSL transfer record rests with Hulk, who joined SIPG from Zenit St Petersburg last year for 55.8 million euros. The club is aiming for the CSL title in the 2017 season.
Oscar will likely replace SIPG’s iconic midfielder Dario Conca, who has been injured since the latter part of last season.
Conca was reported to be “not happy” with the club’s decision of registering him with the team for just the second half of the 2017 season due to his injury, as the Brazilian insists he would be fit enough for the start of the new season — usually in March.
The CSL’s winter transfer window closes at February end.
