SIPG on a streak with another key away win
SHANGHAI SIPG came from behind to grab a 2-1 away win at Shijiazhuang Ever Bright yesterday to stay rooted in the third place in the Chinese Super League standing with 17 points out of eight games — the team’s fifth league victory in a row.
The hosts scored the opener after Shijiazhuang won a penalty 11 minutes into the start of the game after SIPG’s South Korean defender Kim Ju-young was faulted for a handball in the box. Shijiazhuang keeper Guan Zhen stepped up to take the penalty and successfully deceived his counterpart to find the back of the net. It was Guan’s 100th game representing Shijiazhuang.
SIPG grabbed the equalizer in the 38th minute when an unmarked Dario Conca scored with a header following an assist by teammate Wu Lei.
Two minutes into the second half, Wu, who had a great match, scored the winner — and his 100th goal for the club.
“It was not an easy match given the passion of the local fans in the stadium,” Wu said after the match. “But we played well, especially the experienced players on the team.”
On Saturday, another Shanghai outfit, Greenland Shenhua, played out a 0-0 draw at Liaoning Whowin. Former champion Shenhua is in eighth place with 10 points and has yet to win an away match this season.
It was also Shenhua’s 600th match in China’s professional football league.
“We played our style of football, but the result was disappointing,” said Shenhua’s head coach Gregorio Manzano. “Liaoning’s defense was good. We managed to create some scoring chances, but failed to convert them.
“If the team wants to advance to next year’s AFC Champions League, we need more victories in away matches. Next week’s match is a home match (against Guangzhou R&F) and we must beat our opponents,” the Spaniard said.
Defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande sits on top of the standings with 21 points after beating Hangzhou Greentown 2-1 yesterday. Star-studded Jiangsu Suning is second with 20 points after beating
Beijing Guo’an 2-1 in the Chinese capital.
Elsewhere yesterday, Shandong Luneng lost to Tianjin Teda 2-3; and Yanbian Fude beat visiting Changchun Yatai 2-0.
