SIPG sets ACL goal
DESPITE falling at the first hurdle in the 1-2 loss away to Melbourne Victory in Australia, Shanghai SIPG has set a goal of advancing from the group stage in its first AFC Champions League foray.
“It’s the club’s debut show on the Asian stage. We will do our best to at least advance from the group stage,” club general manager Sui Guoyang said yesterday.
SIPG won its ACL berth after finishing second in last year’s Chinese Super League, which was won by the ACL defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande.
Sui watched the team’s debut ACL match against Melbourne Victory alongside more than 100 SIPG supporters at a bar near Shanghai Stadium — the club’s home ground.
“It’s the second club-organized activity for fans this year,” said Sui. “We want to provide our fans a platform to show their support and enthusiasm for the team.”
SIPG midfielder Wang Jiayu, who did not travel with the team to Australia, was also present at the gathering.
Meanwhile, about 1,200 SIPG fans showed up at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium to support their team in a losing cause.
