SIPG sheds new light on record deal for Oscar

SHANGHAI SIPG has confirmed that Oscar’s record-making transfer fee is 60 million euros (US$62.8 million). The Brazil midfielder will join the team in Shanghai on Monday before heading to Qatar for training.
The Chinese Super League side announced the signing of the 25-year-old former Chelsea player before Christmas Eve, but maintained its unsaid policy of hiding contract details, including transfer fee and duration. Reports suggest that Oscar’s contract is for four years.
The other two big-spending CSL clubs of Guangzhou Evergrande and Jiangsu Suning are backed by private enterprises, and therefore prefer to see their names appear frequently in transfer-record headlines. SIPG, financially supported by state-owned company Shanghai International Port Group, is comparatively “low-key” though never reluctant to spend big amid its stated aim of winning at least one title in 2017.
SIPG club general manager Sui Guoyang confirmed yesterday that Oscar’s purchase was worth 60 million euros. Sui said SIPG head coach Andre Villas-Boas wanted Oscar to fly to Shanghai and meet his teammates on January 2. The team is scheduled to hold its first training session of the New Year at Century Park on Tuesday, and take a flight for Doha the same evening.
From Britain to China and then to Qatar, the journey might be a bit troublesome for Oscar, who could have joined the team in Doha itself. But Sui said that the club’s new Portuguese coach insisted that no exception should be made and the team should be together at all times.
SIPG’s forward line, led by the Brazilian trio of Oscar, Hulk and Elkeson, appears to be deadly though luxurious.
Meanwhile, with South Korean defender Kim Ju-young likely to lose his first-team spot in the new regime, SIPG is looking for a new Asian player at the back. Russian Premier League side FC Krasnodar told local media that SIPG has placed an offer for the club’s 29-year-old Uzbek international Odil Ahmedov.
Elsewhere, Argentina striker Carlos Tevez is expected to finalize a transfer to SIPG’s local rival Shanghai Greenland Shenhua this week.
The 32-year-old, who tied the knot in Uruguay last Thursday, is reportedly set to pocket 40 million euros a season — 20 times what he currently earns at Boca Juniors in Argentina.
