SIPG’s Gyan laughs off links to Chelsea

GHANA captain Asamoah Gyan has scoffed at reports linking him with a move away from Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG.

According to a report in Caughtoffside.com and published extensively by local media in Ghana, SIPG is willing to part ways with Gyan, who has suffered injuries since joining last year from al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates, where he enjoyed immense success.

However, Gyan, who did not rule out a return to the English Premier League, denied the widely circulated reports insisting they were untrue.

“It is not true that Chelsea have made my club an offer; neither has the club told me that my services are no more needed,” he told Boss FM, a local radio station in Kumasi, Ghana’s second largest city.

“I was only informed by friends and colleagues that I was close to joining Chelsea per stories on the internet but I told them that I have not heard anything.

“If any club shows up and my club agrees and I also agree personal terms with them, which is possible though, that is only when I can say a deal has been reached. Until that is done, I laugh off internet stories.”

Gyan’s team, meanwhile, will face South Korea’s Jeonbuk Motors in the AFC Champions League quarterfinals following yesterday’s draw.

FC Seoul, the other South Korean team in the last eight, has been drawn against SIPG’s rival Shandong Luneng, which unveiled former Bayern Munich boss Felix Magath as its new coach this week, replacing Brazilian Mano Menezes. Shandong lies in the CSL relegation zone

Abu Dhabi’s al-Ain, champion in 2003, takes on Uzbekistan’s Lokomotiv, while El Jaish of Qatar has been drawn against al-Nasr of UAE.

Sven Goran-Eriksson’s SIPG, which needed a stoppage-time strike to edge out FC Tokyo on away goals to progress, will have its work cut out against free-scoring Jeonbuk, which has netted 16 goals in the tournament so far, one less than Seoul, and won the trophy in 2006.

Shanghai hosts Jeonbuk in the first leg on August 23.

Seoul will host Shandong in the first leg on August 24.

The second legs are set for September 13-14.
