Sampdoria hold on to reach Italian Cup final

SAMPDORIA reached the Italian Cup final despite losing 1-0 to Serie A leader Inter Milan yesterday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic notched the only goal but it wasn't enough to overturn the 3-0 lead Sampdoria held from the first leg.

Walter Mazzarri's side will meet Lazio in the final on May 13 at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

When Julio Cruz flicked on Julio Cesar's long kick and Ibrahimovic fired home in the 27th minute, he appeared to put Inter in position to overturn the three-goal deficit.

He hit the post twice and fired narrowly wide with five minutes left. Ibrahimovic also set up good chances for Cruz and Hernan Crespo, but the Argentines were unable to find the target.

Despite being under constant pressure, Sampdoria's front pair of Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini kept Inter central defenders Marco Matterazzi and Nicolas Burdisso occupied.

Sampdoria defender Hugo Campagnaro nearly put the tie beyond doubt late, but Maxwell headed his shot off the line.

Sampdoria has won the Italian Cup four times, the last in 1994. Lazio also won it four times, its last in 2004.
