Schalke beats hapless Cottbus 4-0 in Bundesliga

SCHALKE beat Energie Cottbus 4-0 yesterday for its third straight win to move back into contention for a place in the UEFA Cup.

Christian Pander and Halil Altintop scored in the first half and Jermaine Jones and Kevin Kuranyi added goals after the break to lift Schalke provisionally past Hoffenheim into sixth place.

Schalke dominated the game and was never threatened by Cottbus, which has lost the last six games in Gelsenkirchen.

The team from eastern Germany remained next-to-last and faces an uphill battle to avoid relegation in the remaining six games.

The game was decided early, after Pander had scored on a deflected shot four minutes into the game and Altintop had doubled the lead in the 23rd.

Schalke cruised in the second half and Jones netted in the 60th and Kuranyi completed the win in the 89th.
