Schalke flops again to extend nightmare start
SCHALKE'S nightmare start to the Bundesliga season continued on Sunday, losing 1-3 at home to rival Borussia Dortmund.
The fourth straight defeat is Schalke's worst start in the German league.
"It is my worst day at Schalke but it's also one of my worst days in football. I haven't started a season with four losses very often," Schalke coach Felix Magath said. "We never got them under control and Dortmund pounced on us."
Japan international Shinji Kawaga scored twice for Dortmund in the 19th and 58th minutes and Schalke played the last half hour with 10 men as Nicolas Plestan was given his second yellow card. Robert Lewandowski made it 3-0 for Dortmund in the 86th before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored his first goal for Schalke in the 89th.
Dortmund jumped to third place in the league with nine points from four rounds.
"It sounds crazy but we should have scored a lot more goals," Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp said. "But otherwise there is nothing else to complain about."
Dortmund could have scored even more goals. Neven Subotic hit the crossbar in the 12th and Kevin Grosskreutz came close in the 45th.
Earlier, Hamburg missed a chance to pull into second place in the Bundesliga, coming back to earn a 1-1 draw at St Pauli.
In the first Bundesliga match between the two teams at Millerntor, promoted St Pauli played strong defense throughout, limiting Hamburg to very few scoring chances. Fabian Boll's strong shot from just outside the area gave St Pauli the lead in the 77th. But Mladen Petric equalized in the 88th with a powerful left-foot shot to the far right corner.
