Schalke mulls Drogba appeal
Schalke 04 is considering whether to appeal to UEFA over Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba's participation in Wednesday's 1-1 Champions League draw in Istanbul, the German Bundesliga club said.
"There are doubts about the validity of the permission to play for Drogba in the Champions League. Schalke 04 reserves its rights and is looking into this," the club said on its official Twitter account
Ivorian striker Drogba joined the Turkish club in late January for 18 months from Shanghai Shenhua.
On the pitch, Schalke showed it is not ready to give up on the season just yet after the Galatasaray draw.
Schalke topped Champions League Group B after a fine start to the season but a slump at the end of last year saw it win just once in its last 11 Bundesliga games.
The draw also gave coach Jens Keller, under pressure due to its domestic slump, some much-needed breathing space. "We played a very good game and did a lot of things right," Keller told reporters. "It was an absolute team performance."
With all eyes on the Turkish team's two new signings - Champions League winners Drogba and Wesley Sneijder - Schalke braved an early onslaught and a fiery stadium atmosphere.
It cancelled out the Burak Yilmaz's early strike on the stroke of halftime through Jermaine Jones, who will be suspended for the return leg.
Schalke also fought back against Mainz 05 last week, twice equalizing in a 2-2 draw.
"It just comes to prove that Schalke are a competition team," said goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand. "When it really matters we are there."
