Schneider retires

GERMANY midfielder Bernd Schneider has announced his retirement due to a chronic spinal complaint. Bayer Leverkusen said yesterday it had accepted a request from the 37-year-old Schneider to terminate his contract because a medical examination had shown that a spinal injury from April 2008 had failed to properly heal. Schneider scored 35 goals in 263 Bundesliga matches for Leverkusen and made 81 appearances for Germany.
