Scolari’s Guangzhou draws Kashiwa in Champions

NEW Guangzhou Evergrande coach Luiz Felipe Scolari’s first taste of the AFC Champions League will be against Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol after the quarterfinal draw was announced yesterday.

The former Brazil manager will want to make an immediate impression in Asia’s top club competition after he replaced Fabio Cannavaro in controversial circumstances this month.

The Italian 2006 World Cup winner was just six months into his first managerial job before he was ousted with Guangzhou top of the Chinese Super League and already into Asia’s last eight.

The AFC Champions League will be Scolari’s first foray into non-domestic competition since he led Brazil to last year’s infamous 1-7 defeat to Germany in the World Cup semifinals.

But the 66-year-old Brazilian will have to wait a while before his Champions League debut, with the two-legged quarterfinals taking place in late August and mid-September.

Evergrande will play away on August 25 while the return leg is scheduled for September 15.

In the East Asian section, 2006 champion Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will bid to break Japanese club Gamba Osaka’s five-match winning streak in the competition.

If Guangzhou advances to the semifinals, it will face either Gamba Osaka or Hyundai.

Elsewhere, 2014 runner-up Al Hilal was drawn against Qatar’s Lekhwiya as it bids to make up for its contentious loss in last year’s final.

The Saudis blamed unfair refereeing after their 0-1 aggregate defeat to Western Sydney Wanderers, and striker Nasser Al Shamrani received a long ban for spitting and headbutting.

The other West Asian quarterfinal pits Iranian debutant Naft Tehran against Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates.

The AFC Champions League is divided into eastern and western halves until the final, ensuring that one club from each side of the continent is represented.
