Second-half flurry sends Bayern top
Title-holder Bayern Munich scored four second-half goals as it came from behind to beat Mainz 05 4-1 yesterday and regain top place in the Bundesliga.
An early penalty from Marco Reus gave Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 win over Hanover 96 while Roman Neustaedter scored in stoppage time as Schalke 04 came from behind to win 3-2 at Eintracht Braunschweig.
Josip Drmic scored late in the game to give winless Nuremberg a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt. SC Freiburg was also still looking for its first win after a goalless draw at Werder Bremen.
Thomas Mueller scored twice while Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic also netted as Bayern went top with 23 points from nine games, one ahead of Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.
Earlier, the German football federation (DFB) said it will consult with FIFA as it investigates Leverkusen’s 2-1 win over Hoffenheim on Friday which featured a goal that should not have been allowed.
Hoffenheim lodged an appeal against the result after losing the game to Stefan Kiessling’s headed “goal,” which was awarded despite clearly missing the target. The ball hit the outside of the net and rolled into the goal through a hole in the netting.
“I didn’t really see it, I turned away but I was surprised to see the ball in. I didn’t know how it got in,” Kiessling said later.
The DFB said in a statement yesterday that it will consult both teams, the referee, its control committee and football’s governing body FIFA “to clarify the legal position for such cases internationally”.
Hoffenheim wants a replay, as has happened before. In 1994, Thomas Helmer famously scored a “phantom goal” for Bayern against Nuremberg, with his side winning the match 2-1. That game was replayed and Bayern won 5-0 to capture the title.
