Sevilla and Getafe pick up away wins in Copa

SEVILLA and Getafe both secured first-leg away victories on Wednesday to take control of their Copa del Rey quarterfinals.

Sevilla easily beat Deportivo La Coruna 3-0 while Getafe ended Mallorca's perfect home record with a 2-1 victory.

Alvaro Negredo opened the scoring in the 27th minute at El Riazor after the Sevilla striker reached Jesus Navas' bouncing long ball to send a header over goalkeeper Manuel Fernandez, who was out of position.

Rodolfo Bodipo headed onto the post in the 36th but Deportivo faded after that as Renato ran onto Diego Perotti's cross in the 68th to head past Fernandez for 2-0.

Two minutes later, Negredo received the ball along the flank and sent a centering pass toward Navas, who streaked into the area and tapped it into an empty goal.

Getafe kept up its chances of reaching a third domestic Copa final in four seasons after Mallorca failed to win at the Ono Stadium for the first time this season after 12 straight wins in all competitions.

Manu del Moral volleyed Pedro Rios' cross in at the far post to open the scoring in the 51st minute before Nicolas "Miku" Ladislao celebrated his Getafe debut with a goal in the 78th. The Venezuela striker held off his marker, then dribbled around him before sliding the ball under goalkeeper German Lux 15 minutes after replacing Roberto Soldado. Chori Castro narrowed the deficit after scoring in injury time for Mallorca.

In Italy, Adrian Mutu scored twice and set up the third to help Fiorentina knock defending champion Lazio out of the Italian Cup with a 3-2 win. The Romanian scored both his goals in the first half and then set up Per Kroldrup for the winner in the 58th.

Lazio pulled within a goal twice, as Mauro Zarate made it 2-1 in the 50th and his strike partner Tommaso Rocchi netted in the 68th. However, despite continued pressure, Lazio was unable to find an equalizer.

Fiorentina will now play the winner between Inter Milan and Juventus, which plays on January 28.

Fiorentina took the lead in the ninth, when Alberto Gilardino hit a low cross from the right and Mutu fired past Lazio keeper Fernando Muslera. Mutu doubled his tally a minute before the break, and Gilardino was again the provider. He cut the ball back from the edge of the area so that Mutu could fire in from the edge of the area.
