Sevilla qualifies for Champions League
RODRI Rios' injury-time goal gave 10-man Sevilla a 3-2 win over Almeria in the Spanish league and a place in the Champions League yesterday.
Strikers Frederic Kanoute and Alvaro Negredo scored Sevilla's other goals which helped the team finish fourth and join the three other Spanish qualifiers - Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia - in Europe's top club competition next season.
Sevilla had been in danger of losing out to Mallorca in the battle for the Champions League after Negredo was dismissed in the 64th minute and Almeria's Juanma Ortiz made it 2-2 with a spectacular shot in the 79th.
Mallorca beat Espanyol 2-0 but Rios' goal kept the island team fifth, with a place in next season's Europa League.
Meanwhile, Getafe downed a depleted Atletico Madrid 3-0 to finish sixth and also qualify for next season's Europa League.
Villarreal's hopes of taking sixth place itself were dashed when it drew 3-3 at Zaragoza.
Sevilla ended the season with 63 points, one more than Mallorca. Getafe, achieving the best final placing in its history, had 58, while Villarreal was next with 56.
Earlier, eighth-place Athletic Bilbao ended its campaign with a 2-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna.
Today, Barcelona will win its 20th league title if it beats relegation-threatened Valladolid at the Camp Nou or matches the result of second-place Madrid, which visits another side in danger of losing its first-division place, Malaga.
Kanoute nodded home in the 16th minute from Jesus Navas' cross only for Almeria midfielder Fernando Soriano to equalize with a volley on the stroke of halftime.
Navas also helped to put Sevilla back in front in the 53rd, his cross parried by Almeria goalkeeper Esteban Suarez before bouncing into the net off Negredo, a former Almeria player.
However, Negredo was then sent off - his third ejection of the season - for appearing to swear at the assistant referee after being judged offside. Negredo is expected to be suspended for next Wednesday's Copa del Rey final against Atletico.
Ortiz then leveled with a fierce swerving shot from just outside the penalty area, with substitute Rodri's acrobatic winning goal provoking celebrations and also clashes between the two sets of players and their officials.
Mallorca, whose financial worries reportedly may jeopardize the team's Europa League participation, gained the 15th win of its 19 home games this season.

The visitors lined up before kickoff to applaud Atletico for its 2-1 victory over Fulham but then struck in the 14th minute, with striker Roberto Soldado playing a wall pass with Adrian Gonzalez and slotting the ball home.
Soldado doubled his tally in the 53rd by turning home Pedro Leon's cross from the right following some slack Atletico defending.
Substitute Daniel Parejo sealed Getafe's win in the 87th after breaking past Atletico's defense and firing home.
Villarreal trailed Zaragoza 3-0 after 35 minutes following strikes by Eliseu Pereira, Adrian Colunga and Ruben Pulido.

Bilbao's win at its San Mames Stadium lifted the eighth-place team - its best finish in six seasons - to 54 points.
Deportivo, which has slumped in the second half of the season, ended with 47 points in 10th place.
The game marked the final appearance of Bilbao's former Spain forward Joseba Etxeberria, who is retiring after 15 seasons with the club.
Etxeberria missed out on a final goal when he sidefooted narrowly wide early in the second half before leaving the field in tears to a huge ovation on being substituted in the 72nd.
