Sevilla snaps winless streak
Ten-man Sevilla won 1-0 at Rayo Vallecano yesterday to end a six-game winless streak in the Spanish league. The victory lifted Sevilla to within five points of sixth place and Spain’s last Europa League spot.
After a drab first half by both sides, fullback Jorge “Coke” Andujar headed in Ivan Rakitic’s freekick to grab the 57th-minute winner at Vallecas Stadium.
Rayo remained in second-to-last place and five points from safety after conceding its league worst 59th goal in 25 games.
On Saturday, Barcelona slumped to a stinging 1-3 loss at Real Sociedad to relinquish the league lead to Real Madrid.
Gareth Bale scored a blistering long-range strike to help Madrid brush aside Elche 3-0 at home, and Barcelona was unable to match that with a win.
Instead, it was overrun by Sociedad’s dynamic attack led by forwards Antoine Griezmann and Carlos Vela.
Barcelona’s defeat confirmed the change in course in the league title race over the past two months, leaving Madrid in command and waiting to see if Atletico can keep up when it visits Osasuna. After starting the season with 13 wins and a draw, Barcelona has dropped points in four of its last seven games.
