Shandong tops Harbin in opener

SHANDONG Luneng needed a last-gasp goal to defeat newly-promoted Harbin Yiteng 1-0 in the opener of the 2014 Chinese Super League in Jinan, Shandong Province, yesterday.

Shandong, the CSL runner-up last season, was held at home by Thailand’s Buriram United in the Asian Champions League on February 25, and definitely needed a win to start the new season.

However, the defense-minded visitors were in no mood to oblige. Harbin defended resolutely, with goalkeeper Han Fangteng in superb form.

Just when it seemed that a draw was inevitable, Li Xudong of Harbin was sent off for two yellow cards in the 88th minute and the hosts scored through Urso. “It was my first goal in the CSL, and I am satisfied. My goal is to help Luneng win the CSL crown,” the Brazilian said.
