Shanghai clubs stumble in CSL

It was another heart-breaking weekend for Shanghai fans as all three local teams suffered defeats in the 20th round of the Chinese Super League.

Shanghai East Asia lost 0-3 last night at home to Guangzhou R&F, which is led by former England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson.

A superb free-kick by Australian Eddy Bosnar gave the visitors the lead 15 minutes into the match. East Asia had much of the possession but failed to find the net.

Nigerian striker Yakubu scored a brace for R&F in the second half. He broke the off-side trap to score in R&F’s first attack after the break. East Asia thought it had reduced the deficit when Wu Lei’s free-kick hit the post and Lius Carlos Caezas stabbed in the rebound, only for the goal to be ruled off-side.

Yakubu then sealed the scoreline with a goal in the 75th minute.

“A good game and maybe a little bit luck,” Swede Eriksson said, praising his team’s performance. “We played better in the second half, and I’m happy because finally I know we can win away games.”

It was just the second away victory of the season for R&F.

East Asia head coach Gao Hongbo was stoic in defeat. “R&F is a strong team, however, to lose 0-3 is not what we expected. The whole team is not in good form. I’m not happy with my foreign players’ performance today.”

East Asia sits 10th in the 16-team league but above the other two local clubs.

Guangzhou Evergrande tops the table with 51 points ahead of its match with Dalian Aerbin today.

Elsewhere, Shanghai Shenhua gave up a 2-0 lead to lose 2-3 away to Shandong Luneng on Saturday. Shandong is second in the league on 40 points.

Shenhua took the lead courtesy of a brace by Cape Verde forward Dady but Shandong’s Brazilian forward Vagner Love, making his CSL debut, scored twice, including a penalty, and Yang Xu grabbed a late winner.

Also, Beijing Guo’an defeated visiting Shanghai Shenxin 2-1.
