Shanghai sets targets but not for 2014 season
THE newly named Shanghai Greenland Shenhua FC has already set targets for the future — the domestic and Asian league championships.
But no specific goals were set for the 2014 season, said Wu Xiaohui, chairman of the board of Shanghai Greenland Football Club.
The club announced its new name on Thursday after real estate enterprise Shanghai Greenland Group took over at the end of last month. It has already handed in the registration application to the China Football Association and is waiting for the approval.
The team has retained the name Shenhua — the team’s identity for two decades — for the sake of its fans.
Wu however hinted that the club’s supporters can expect “some surprise” in the coming season, which kicks off early next month.
The chairman said the club will strive for a stable position on both the domestic and international stage in next two seasons, adding that its goals will be CSL and Asian Champions League titles in the near future.
Three foreign players have been confirmed for the new season. The club has retained the services of Giovanni Moreno from Colombia and Firas Al-Khatib from Syria and has signed South Korean defender Cho Byung-kuk.
Wu said they were in talks for two more foreign players and hopes to complete the formalities before the start of the season.
Shenhua sold key players Wang Dalei and Dai Lin before Greenland was roped in to ease the financial pressures and keep itself in China’s top tier league.
The new management expressed full confidence in the club’s future.
“Give us three years, and we will give our fans a satisfactory result,” Wu said last month.
Shen Xiangfu remains the head coach of the team.
The team will leave for South Korea to train for two weeks next Wednesday.
