Sheffield United, Hull seal FA Cup semis spots
Sheffield United became the first third-tier team to reach the FA Cup semifinals since 2001 by beating Charlton 2-0 in the first of three quarterfinal matches yesterday.
Managed by Nigel Clough, the son of late English coaching great Brian Clough, United continued its stunning exploits in the competition.
Two goals in the space of two second-half minutes by Ryan Flynn and John Brayford earned a trip to Wembley Stadium.
United has eliminated Aston Villa and Fulham in the run to the last four. It last played in the Premier League in 2007.
Hull also advanced to the semifinals by beating Sunderland 3-0 in an all-Premier League clash with three second-half goals in 10 minutes from Curtis Davies, David Meyler and Matt Fryatt.
Manchester City was to play reigning champion Wigan in a repeat of the 2013 final late yesterday.
On Saturday, Chelsea kept up its remorseless march to the English Premier League title with a 4-0 thrashing of Tottenham, while a rejuvenated Mesut Ozil helped Arsenal secure a place in the FA Cup semifinals for the first time since 2009 with a 4-1 win over Everton.
Chelsea provisionally extended its lead to seven points after capitalizing on a woeful second half from Spurs to score all its goals in the final 34 minutes.
Samuel Eto’o opened the scoring and then was fouled in the area by Younes Kaboul, earning the French defender a straight red card.
Eden Hazard converted the 60th-minute penalty, and substitute Demba Ba added two late goals in the space of 75 seconds.
Elsewhere in a truncated league program, beleaguered champion Manchester United eased past West Bromwich Albion 3-0 to climb to sixth and keep alive its faint hopes of finishing in the Champions League positions.
