Shenhua, East Asia play draw

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua and Shanghai East Asia drew 1-1 at Hongkou Football Stadium last night in the city’s last derby of this year’s Chinese Super League.

The two sides also drew by the same scoreline in their first clash at Shanghai Stadium earlier this season. Led by former Shenhua coach Xu Genbao, East Asia carried a better form into the game and dominated the opening 30 minutes.

However, it was the hosts who drew first blood. Midfielder Jiang Kun, receiving a long pass in the 37th, dribbled past two East Asia defenders and scored but not after the ball hit the inside corner of the right bar.

Luck was obviously not treating the visitors the same way. The goal post deprived East Asia of an equalizer in the 40th. It got a penalty two minutes later when Swedish striker Tobias Hysen was upended in the box. However, Wu Lei’s tame shot was saved by Shenhua goalie Qiu Shengjiong.

Shenhua continued to put pressure after the break, with East Asia goalie Yan Junling making two crucial saves within four minutes of the restart.

The equalizer came in the 65th. Unmarked striker Zhu Zhengrong collected a long pass and volleyed the ball in an arc as it flew over Shenhua’s Qiu and into the net.

And that’s how it ended.

East Asia stayed fourth on 41 points in the 16-team CSL standing after 23 rounds. Shenhua (27) is 10th.

Brazil striker Elkeson’s hat trick helped defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande crush Liaoning Whowin 6-0. The team is on course for a fourth straight league title with 54 points, six more than Beijing Guo’an, which beat Harbin Yiteng 2-0.

Guangzhou R&F is third on 41 points because of its superior goal difference over East Asia. The top three finishers will gain spots in next season’s AFC Champions League qualifiers.

The other Shanghai team, Shenxin, lost 0-1 to Tianjin Teda on Saturday, It lies 12th on 25 points.

There are eight more rounds remaining in this year’s CSL season.
