Shenhua draws with Shandong
SHANGHAI Shenhua was held goalless at home by Shandong Luneng last night in the eighth round of the Chinese Super League without injured player-coach Nicolas Anelka.
The 33-year-old apparently injured his thigh during training on Wednesday and had a cold on Friday, according to Guo Guangqi, Shenhua team manager who attended the press conference instead of acting head coach Jean-Florent Ikwange Ibenge.
Shenhua started several youngsters for the game yesterday following injuries to key starters, including Anelka and Australian striker Joel Griffiths. "We played some tight defense tonight but the offense wasn't good," Guo commented.
Luneng controlled the ball for most of the game but could not find a way past Shenhua goalkeeper Wang Dalei.
The visitors, having already made all three substitutions, were forced to play nearly 15 minutes with only 10 men after midfielder Roda Antar was injured while fighting for the ball with Shenhua's Mario Bozic in the 76th minute.
"I'm proud of my team. We played good football and dominated the game," Luneng's Dutch coach Henk ten Cate said. "But that's football, Barcelona played better than Chelsea but was still eliminated."
Elsewhere, it was: Dalian Aerbin 1, Changchun Yatai 2; Guangzhou R&F 2, Liaoning Hongyun 1; Hangzhou Greentown 1, Dalian Shide 1; and Jiangsu Sainty 5, Henan Jianye 1. Defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande, which beat Tianjin Teda 1-0 on Friday, leads the table with 19 points. Shenhua and Luneng have nine points.
