Shenhua edges Sainty to go 5th

Shanghai Shenhua climbed to fifth in the Chinese Super League after edging Jiangsu Sainty 2-1 at Hongkou Football Stadium last night, with all three goals coming from freekicks.

The visitors took the lead half an hour after kick-off, when midfielder Ji Xiang curled in a superb freekick, which landed in the upper left corner evading a fully-stretched Wang Dalei in the Shenhua goal.

The hosts earned a freekick of their own almost from the same spot just a minute into the second half. Xu Liang’s shot hit the wall of defenders but found Cape Verde’s Dady in the box, who scored the equalizer with a header.

Luck was not favoring Jiangsu at Hongkou yesterday, as Romanian striker Cristian Danalache hit the bar with a header in the 58th minute before goalie Wang made the save.

Shenhua’s decider came in the 68th when Colombian Giovanni Moreno was fouled while trying to break through into the box. Midfielder Xu, back in the starting line-up after an injury hiatus, found the net with a direct freekick, very similar to Jiangsu’s goal.

Sainty poured men forward in the last 10 minutes, with Danalache’s shot from inside the box hitting the post in the 80th. Serbian striker Aleksandar Jevtic’s goal two minutes later was ruled off-side.

Shenhua held on despite six minutes of added time, and rose to fifth in the CSL standing on 32 points following the victory. Jiangsu lies 12th with 26 points.

Earlier, Shanghai East Asia lost 0-1 at home to Shandong Luneng. Former Shenhua captain Du Wei scored the only goal with a header from a Hao Junmin corner in the 57th.

Shandong is second in the league on 52 points, 11 points behind defending champion Guangzhou Evergrade, whose game against Liaoning Whowin was delayed to October due to its mid-week AFC Champions League game. East Asia sits ninth on 29 points.

The third Shanghai team, Shenxin, hosts Qingdao Jonoon today.
