Shenhua edges Shenxin
ARGENTINE striker Toranzo scored an early goal as Shanghai Shenhua edged Shanghai Shenxin 1-0 yesterday in the first of six local derbies in the Chinese Super League this season.
Shenhua, punished to start with minus six points for its role in a match-fixing scandal in 2003, however, ranks 15th of 16 teams following a home draw to start the season and yesterday's away win.
Despite losing its first two games, Shenxin stays one place above Shenhua. Shanghai East Asia, the third CSL team from Shanghai, remained 10th after a 1-1 draw with Guizhou Renhe.
Guangzhou Evergrande, Beijing Guo'an, Shandong Luneng and Qingdao Jonoon lead with two wins out of two.
"We played well, especially in the first half. In the second half we missed some opportunities but we took control. It shouldn't have ended with just 1-0, but I'm satisfied with the result," said Shenhua coach Sergio Batista. "The team is going according to my direction and we'll improve next week."
The goal came in the third minute. Syrian forward Firas received a long pass from the back in a breakaway, drawing out Shenxin defender Zhao Zuojun and even goalkeeper Liu Dianzuo. He then calmly passed the ball to Toranzo to score into an empty net.
Yesterday's game was also the first time that Shenxin midfielder Yu Tao, a former Shenhua captain, faced his erstwhile team. Despite the booing, Yu came to the stands where the visiting fans were and applauded them.
In other CSL games over the weekend, it was: Liaoning Whowin 1, Tianjin Teda 1; Hangzhou Greentown 3, Guangzhou R&F 1; Shandong Luneng 2, Changchun Yatai 0; Qingdao Jonoon 1, Dalian Aerbin 0; Beijing Guo'an 1, Wuhan Zall 0; and Guangzhou Evergrande 3, Jiangsu Sainty 0.
