Shenhua fails to find the net in Shide draw
SHANGHAI Shenhua was held to a goalless draw at home by Dalian Shide last night despite fielding its strongest squad, including Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba, Moreno and Joel Griffiths.
Australian striker Griffiths accidentally blocked Moreno?s shot in the Shide box in the second half and missed a one-on-one opportunity later.
"The game was very balanced, but we played a bit differently than usual and the result was not expected. We played better in the second half. However, we lacked the spirit from the previous games," Shenhua's Argentine coach Sergio Batista rationalized. "Didier did his best. The game on Wednesday might have affected him. He may have been tired but he still did his best. He tried to win."
The draw kept Shenhua three points behind Shide and in 12th place in the 16-team Chinese Super League.
"We dropped two important points tonight but we'll still fight until we enter the top three," Batista told reporters after the game. "We haven't lost for seven or eight games but the result still hurts as we didn't get two more points tonight."
Shenhua's best chance came in the 61st minute when Drogba's pass hit the Shide post as goalkeeper Zhang Chong tried to turn the ball away. Zhang later blocked Anelka's follow-up shot while Moreno's effort was accidentally blocked by Griffiths in front of goal.
Griffiths later fluffed a one-on-one opportunity in the 82nd after receiving a pass from Drogba, who created a handful of chances for his team.
Shide also had its good chances but its Brazilian striker Carlos Adriano's shot in the 43rd was blocked on the line by defender Bai Jiajun.
In other CSL games yesterday, Dalian Aerbin beat Guizhou Renhe 2-1 at home, Changchun Yatai lost 1-2 to Guangzhou Evergrande, Hangzhou Greentown lost 1-2 to Tianjin Teda, Jiangsu Sainty tied 1-1 with Shanghai Shenxin. On Friday? Beijing Guo'an tied with Liaoning Whowin 1-1.
