Shenhua hires Anelka, replaces assistant coaches
SHANGHAI Shenhua Football Club has signed in French striker Nicolas Anelka as its player and assistant coach, the club announced today.
Shenhua's French coach Jean Tigana retains his job but his assistants Gentili Baptiste, Levy Marc and Propos Roger had their contracts terminated, the club said.
Tigana, Anelka and four new assistant coaches will form a new coach team for Shenhua, said Zhu Jun, the club's chief investor.
Training coaches Jean-Florent Ibenge and Alioune Toure, goalkeeping coach Ian Walker and physical coach Dan Harris will arrive in Shanghai by tomorrow, according to news.sina.com.cn.
"From now on, all the attention and pressure will be on me," Anelka said. "I have no choice but to play good matches."
Zhu said the changes were made to guide the team to the right direction.
"I'd rather make imperfect decisions than run into a crisis with no solution," Zhu tweeted on his Weibo microblog. "We should pay attention to locker room behaviors that are harmful to the team."
The high-profile boss even used former Chelsea coach Villas Boas as an example to support his decision.
Zhu also expects Anelka to become a legendary coach in China. "Why not? The next Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho or Arsene Wenger can be tagged 'Made In China.'" Zhu wrote.
Shenhua earned only five points and won just one of the five games in the Chinese Football Association Super League, which made Zhu impatient.
The team will confront Tianjin Teda tomorrow evening in Shenhua's home stadium and Anelka is expected to play.
