Shenhua hires Gillot as coach for next season

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua named Frenchman Francis Gillot as its new head coach yesterday after dismissing Argentine Sergio Batista following the team’s unsatisfactory performance in the 2014 season.

Batista was recalled to the club in March after the team’s poor start to the 2014 Chinese Super League campaign. However, the 51-year-old failed to take the team into the top eight — a primary goal set by the club at the start of the season. Greenland Shenhua eventually finished 9th in the 16-team league which was won by three-time defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande.

The 54-year-old Gillot has coached in the French league, including RC Lens and Sochaux. He quit as Bordeaux boss in May.

According to Shanghai Greenland Shenhua FC chairman Wu Xiaohui, the teams under Gillot were not the strongest in French Ligue 1, but made obvious improvements under his guidance, which is just what the CSL club needs.

Gillot’s diligent working style also pleased his new Shanghai bosses, with the Frenchman signing a two-year contract for an annual salary of 2.5 million euros (US$3.1 million). It’s said that his annual income could reach 4 million euros if he leads the team to at least a sixth-place finish — a primary goal set by the club for the 2015 season, which kicks off in March.

Gillot did not show up at yesterday’s press conference, but expressed his confidence through a video-taped message. He, and three of his long-term assistant coaches, would meet the players during the club’s winter training in Spain in January according to a previous plan.

Greenland Shenhua also introduced two new players yesterday — defender Li Jianbin transferred from Guangzhou, and striker Wang Yun from city rival Shanghai Shenxin.

Last month, another local CSL team, Shanghai SIPG, named Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson as its new coach for next season. Eriksson took over from veteran Shanghai coach Xu Genbao, while the club’s new owner, the Shanghai International Port Group, also changed its name from Shanghai East Asia to Shanghai SIPG FC.
