Shenhua hopeful of Drogba deal
SHANGHAI Shenhua is hopeful of signing Chelsea's star forward Didier Drogba before the Spring Festival next Monday, local media reported.
Zhou Jun, board member of the club, confirmed that negotiations were ongoing to get the Ivory Coast player to Shanghai and was hopeful that a deal could be reached by the weekend, Dragon TV reported.
"Everything is going well so far though there have been a few obstacles," Zhou said. "They never turned us down, which is good for us."
Although the odds were against them in landing the best striker in the world, the club is optimistic about the deal, especially after signing Drogba's Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka, Zhou told reporters.
"It's like making a blockbuster film. When superstars like Jacky Chan, Jet Li and Zhou Xun have confirmed their participation, other actors and actress will be confident of the movie," Zhou added.
Zhu Jun, Shenhua's chief investor, also appeared confident of a deal on his microblog yesterday. "The bargaining has been breathtaking and do you dare to play?" Zhou said. "We'll talk about the advertising. We'll talk about the salary. Shenhua will not give up easily."
"It is like chasing a pretty girl," Zhu added. "You may be turned down in the beginning, but after you keep sending invitations one after another, you'll always end up good. The first one to give up is always the loser."
Neither Zhou nor Zhu revealed any details of the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Shenhua had also signed Australian striker Joel Griffiths as the team's second foreign player for the next season.
The 32-year-old player scored 28 goals for Beijing Guo'an in the Chinese Super League in the past three years.
Griffith signed a one-year contract with Shenhua with a pay packet reportedly to the tune of US$1 million. Griffith arrived in Shanghai yesterday.
