Shenhua midfielder Qin Sheng ‘not for sale’ : club GM

SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua club general manager Wu Xiaohui tagged midfielder Qin Sheng “not for sale” as the latest punishment against the 30-year-old, who had been criticized after deliberately stamping on the foot of Tianjin Quanjian’s Axel Witsel during their Chinese Super League match on Saturday.

In Qin’s next four contract years with Shenhua, the club will not accept any transfer request from Qin or any bidding from other football clubs. Before being recalled into the club’s first team, Qin will only receive a monthly salary of 2,190 yuan (US$ 317) – Shanghai’s lowest wage standard – in the secondary team. If he misses trainings due to health reason, the wage will be cut by 20 percent.

“We will not let someone, who hurt the club’s image and benefits, to leave the club and seek for personal benefits elsewhere,” Wu said in a meet with the team at Pudong’s training base on Monday morning. The meet was attended by head coach Gus Poyet, club officials and all players including Qin.

Qin picked up a red card after deliberately stamping on the foot of the Belgium in Tianjin’s box 24 minutes after kick-off, leaving Shenhua fighting with one man short for the majority of the 1-1 draw. The match was broadcasted live on CCTV as well as Britain’s Sky Sports. The national Xinhua News Agency criticized Qin’s behavior, saying it was a shame for China’s soccer.

Shenhua announced the club’s punishments to Qin hours after the match – a 300,000 yuan (US$43,400) fine and a “relegation” to the club’s secondary team which would keep him away from CSL for a while. Apart from apologizing through social communication platforms, Qin also read his apology in front of the whole team during the meet.

Wu said there are only three “outlets” for Qin. “The first one is to correct yourself and make a fresh start. Come back to the (first) team with a new attitude and complete the four-year contract.”

“The second is to laze away in the secondary team for the next four years and then leave the team at the age of 35… The other choice will enable you leave the team proudly, which is to work hard and help Shenhua win a championship. After that, you can raise a transfer request.”

This was among the strictest punishments Shenhua ever handed to a player.

“I made the announcements because this incident badly hurt the feelings of the club’s management team, the coaches, the players and our fans. You (Qin) either show your sincerity and apologize with real actions, or just give an end to your career,” said Wu.

The CFA is yet to announce its punishments against Qin.
