Shenhua rises above SIPG
SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua gained advantage over city rival SIPG in the fight for a top-three finish in the Chinese Super League after defeating Tianjin Teda 3-1 away last night.
The victory helped Greenland Shenhua to climb to third place in the standings on 45 points — five points less than second-placed Jiangsu Suning, while SIPG is fourth on 43 points after its goalless draw with leader Guangzhou Evergrande on Saturday. The CSL has four more rounds to go, and the top three finishers qualify for next year’s AFC Champions League.
In Tianjin, Shenhua’s first goal came from a corner in the 40th minute as Lu Zheng’s pass found an unmarked Li Jianbin in the box to score with a header. Teda’s Hui Jiakang equalized 10 minutes after the break. Shenhua striker Obafemi Martins assisted Lu for a goal in the 73rd before the Nigerian added another himself to secure the victory for the visitors.
At Shanghai Stadium on Saturday, SIPG goalie Yan Junlin blocked a penalty in the closing minutes of the first half to assure a clean sheet for the hosts. Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Evergrande was given the penalty following a handball in the box. Brazil midfielder Ricardo Goulart stood on the spot, but sent the ball into Yan’s arms.
“He approached the spot slowly, waiting for me to shift weight. But I stayed cool, and the pressure was on him,” Yan said after the match.
SIPG head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said that gaining two points from Evergrande in the home and away CSL matches was an acceptable result, and the next league match against Jiangsu will be a difficult one.
SIPG general manager Sui Guoyang also revealed the club’s resolution for the rest of the season.
“The players will give everything they have in the next few matches to realize our goal (of a top-three finish),” Sui said during the monthly fan gathering held by the club yesterday. Near 100 SIPG fans were invited to tour the players’ dressing room at Shanghai Stadium. It was the first time the team had opened the area to the public. SIPG players Wang Shenchao, Lu Wenjun and Cai Huikang joined the fans during the stadium tour.
