Shenhua slumps to season's first defeat
SHANGHAI Shenhua suffered its first loss of the season, slumping to a 0-3 defeat to reigning Chinese Super League champion Guangzhou Evergrande at Hongkou Football Stadium last night.
Former Shenhua forward Gao Lin scored a brace after coming on as a substitute in the second half. Zhang Linfan scored the team's second goal with a long-range shot in the 70th minute.
With the home loss, Shenhua dropped to 10th in the 16-team league on eight points while undefeated Evergrande stayed top with 22 points after nine rounds. Shenhua started the 2013 CSL season with a minus six-point penalty for fixing a match 10 years ago.
Shenhua coach Sergio Batista was bitterly disappointed. "I feel angry. We played well in the first half. We created a lot of opportunities to score but didn't catch any, but I still felt we played better than them," the Argentine said after the game. "We played loose for about 10 minutes in the second half and gave them chances, but I don't think they had more chances in the second half than we had in the first. They had some luck."
Shenhua did create several chances in the first half but the shots were either stopped by Evergrande goalkeeper Zeng Cheng or missed their target. Giovanni Moreno had the ball in the net for the home team in the 32nd minute but the Colombian's effort was ruled offside.
The first goal came in the 56th as Gao scored after receiving a pass from Lucas Barrios. Evergrande extended the lead in the 70th when Shenhua midfielder Xu Liang headed a corner out of the box. Zhang hit a half-volley that somehow eluded all the defenders and the goalkeeper to go into the net. Despite Shenhua fighting back, Gao sealed the win with a chipped shot in the 83rd.
