Shenhua stumbles at home to Shandong
SHANGHAI Greenland Shenhua slumped 1-2 to 10-man Shandong Luneng at Hongkou Stadium in the 26th round of the Chinese Super League last night.
Shenhua started with its former-English Premier League trio of Demba Ba, Tim Cahill, Mohamed Sissoko, as well as Giovanni Moreno. Shandong head coach Cuca had to sit in the stands as part of a seven-month ban for attacking a linesman in a CSL match against Guizhou Renhe on June 4.
The hosts had a dream start and were awarded a penalty 80 seconds into the match. Ba was tackled inside the box by Shandong defender Wang Tong. The Senegal striker took the penalty himself, beating former Shenhua goalkeeper Wang Dalei.
Shandong’s Brazilian striker Diego Tardelli had a great one-on-one chance against Shenhua goalie Geng Xiaofeng in the 16th, but appeared to hesitate and the ball was cleared.
The visitors won a penalty, too, in the 26th. Shenhua’s Australian international Cahill was whistled for handball when trying to block a shot from Junior Urso. Urso’s Brazilian teammate Aloisio leveled from the spot.
Shandong had to play with 10 men for the last 15 minutes after defender Dai Lin was shown a red card for dragging down Ba on the top of the box. Just when it seemed the game would end 1-1, the visitors seized the last attacking chance in injury time as Tardelli’s freekick found Urso in the box, and the latter sealed the win with a header.
Shenhua now lies fifth in the standings, along with Henan Jianye, on 36 points. Shandong is third on 52, followed by Beijing Guo’an on 50.
Elsewhere, Beijing beat Jiangsu Sainty 1-0 and Henan was held 0-0 by Changchun Yatai.
In a Saturday match, Shanghai SIPG beat Guizhou Renhe 3-1, thanks to goals from Davi, Tobias Hysen and Yang Boyu. SIPG temperately tops the standings on 55 points with four rounds to go — one point more than Guangzhou Evergrande. Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team takes on city rival Guangzhou R&F tonight in a late 26th-round match.
The top-two sides clashed at Shanghai Stadium last week, and the defending champion took over the CSL lead from SIPG after a 3-0 victory.
Another local team Shanghai Shenxin, last in the 16-team table on 17 points, lost 1-4 to Tianjin Teda on Saturday.
