Shenhua suffers another setback
NICOLAS Anelka failed to bring Shanghai Shenhua a win in his new role as player-coach. The team lost to Tianjin Teda 0-1 in the Chinese Super League last night in Shanghai.
Shenhua manager Jean Tigana left Hongkou Stadium before the match started, leading to speculation about his future. Neither Tigana nor Anelka attended the post-match press conference.
Austrian striker Joel Griffiths did not play and wasn't even on the bench. It was unclear why as before the match there had been no news of an injury or illness.
Shenhua's deputy team leader Yan Xiang said: "Our coaching staff is going through some reconstruction and changes.
"In tonight's game we tried to play our football and controlled the game some of the time but the result was not good."
Yan said Shenhua's lineup and substitutions during the game were decided after a discussion by the whole coaching staff and were not made by a single person.
"Tigana is working on a plan to fix Shenhua's problems," Yan explained.
The press conference lasted only a few minutes, thus preventing reporters from asking more questions.
Anelka was the last player to leave the stadium last night. A Shanghai Daily reporter asked him about the match but he did not respond. However, Anelka was friendly with fans and signed some autographs.
Shenhua started with a 4-4-2 formation with Anelka on the right wing and Mathieu Manset up front. Shenhua central back Dai Lin returned from a head injury after missing two games.
The only goal of the game occurred in the 37th minute. Chen Tao, a former Shenhua midfielder, passed the ball into the box. Tianjin striker Sjoerd Ars, who is from the Netherlands, scored with a shot into the roof of the net.
Anelka had a chance to equalize the game in the second half but his chip shot was well wide. He also was yellow-carded in the 76th minute for diving while trying to draw a penalty.
Teda's Serbian coach Josip Kuze was pleased with his team's defensive effort and said it was the difference in the game.
Li Weifeng, a former Shenhua defender who now plays for Tianjin, said: "Both teams are going through a tough time and I hope Shenhua will battle through it."
It was Teda's first ever victory against Shenhua in Shanghai.
In other games, defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande beat Hangzhou Greentown 3-1 at home and Beijing Guo'an used home-field advantage to defeat Shandong Luneng 2-1.
