Shenhua surprises with Brazilian defender
SHANGHAI Shenhua has secured the services of Brazilian defender Moises Moura Pinheiro from a Qatari club as its third foreign player for the coming season, the club announced last night.
Reports in the past few weeks had suggested that the club was keen on former England international Matthew Upson, but the decision to get Moises instead was made by French coach Jean Tigana before the team flew back from a training camp in Spain on Wednesday.
The club lapped up the Brazilian in less than 72 hours. The details of the contract were not disclosed yesterday. Moises deal should end all talks of getting Upson.
Shanghai has already signed Frenchman Nicolas Anelka from Chelsea and Australian Joel Griffiths from Beijing Guo'an.
Zhu Jun, chief investor of Shenhua, confirmed the deal by re-posting a story of the transfer from Sina.com on his microblog.
Zhu also confirmed that the club paid more money to get the 32-year-old defender than Upson.
"The only hope now is that the coach has made the right decision!" Zhu commented on the transfer on his microblog last night. "Then we won't feel we made a mistake for spending that much money!"
The club said Tigana changed his mind after watching Shenhua's performance during warm-up matches in Spain. Shenhua was beaten 0-3, 0-6 and 0-2 by clubs in Valencia.
Tigana wanted the central back to be "skillful and aggressive, which should be suitable for the team", Sina.com quoted a club source as saying. The report said Shenhua had paid an "unimaginable high price" to sign the best defender in Tigana's eye.
Moises has played for Brazilian side Flamengo and Portugal's Braga. He was signed yesterday from Qatari club Al Rayyan.
Meanwhile, Shenhua also announced new ticket prices for home games for both the Chinese Super League and the FA Cup.
The new year-long membership card for fans will cost 800 yuan - a big jump from last season's 350 yuan.
A single match ticket for Hongkou Stadium will cost between 80 to 380 yuan, the club said. Locals can also avail of VIP membership card for 1,500 yuan. Tickets and cards will go on sale from Monday.
