Shenxin wins to ease relegation fears

Shanghai Shenxin edged Shanghai East Asia 1-0 thanks to an own goal in the 27th round of the Chinese Super League yesterday, earning a welcome three points in a tense battle to retain its top-league status next season.
The only goal came just 17 seconds after kickoff. Visiting Shenxin led its first attack when midfielder Zhu Jiawei tried to challenge East Asia’s goal with a header, only to be interrupted by defender Sun Kai, who mistakenly tapped the ball into his own net, leaving no time for goalie Yan Junling to react.
Despite the absence of strikers Mao Jianqing and Brazilian Kieza, Shenxin continued to push forward against its well-known opponent. But there were no further goals as both goalkeepers stayed solid. The victory, in what was the last of six local derbies, was Shenxin’s only win in the four games against the other two Shanghai teams.
With three more rounds to go, Shenxin sits 11th on 31 points in the 16-team league. East Asia has 32 points and is seventh.
Elsewhere, a game between bottom teams Qingdao Jonoon and Wuhan Zall ended goalless. Wuhan, on 16 points, will be relegated while Qingdao is still not out of the woods, sitting second from bottom on 25 points.
Guangzhou R&F edged Changchun Yatai 1-0. Changchun (26) lies third from bottom. Jiangsu Sainty and Hangzhou Greentown placed 12th and 13th in the standing after a 1-1 draw last night, both on 30 points.
Shanghai Shenhua (32) hosts Guizhou Renhe (41) today, when Shandong Luneng faces Guangzhou Evergrande at home.
A draw will ensure Guangzhou will win its third straight Chinese league title as it tops the table on 66 points, having played one game less. The 11-point lead over Shandong will allow Evergrande to shift its focus to preparing for the AFC Champions League final later this month.
