Sneijder puts Inter into Cup quarters
WESLEY Sneijder's second-half goal sent Inter Milan into the Italian Cup quarterfinals with a 1-0 home win over Livorno on Wednesday.
The Serie A leader, which will meet Juventus or Napoli in the next round, had two decent chances in the first half but the visitors deserved to be level at the break.
Dutch playmaker Sneijder, who has not lost in an Inter shirt since signing from Real Madrid in August but was sent off in the 1-1 Serie A draw at Atalanta on Sunday, then fired in on 60 minutes to break the deadlock.
Coach Jose Mourinho rotated his squad slightly but still included some of his big hitters as he battles to fight off a storm over his verbal abuse of a journalist on Sunday.
Inter was playing in its first game of this season's Cup, a much-maligned competition which fails to excite the public.
The rest of the last 16 fixtures take place in mid-January when holders Lazio host Palermo.
In France, Bordeaux edged Montpellier 1-0 thanks to a goal from Brazilian forward Jussie to consolidate first place in the French league.
The defending champion claimed its sixth straight win in all competitions to top the standings with 37 points from 17 matches, six clear of second-place Marseille.
"We bring back three points that allow us to assert our first place," Jussie said.
Jussie outpaced Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and then fired the ball past Montpellier goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren in the 58th for the only goal of the game.
Also on Wednesday, it was: Lorient 1, Marseille 2; Lyon 2, Boulogne 0; Monaco 1, Rennes 0; Paris Saint-Germain 1, Lens 1; Nancy 2, Nice 0; and Le Mans 1, Grenoble 0.
