Sneijder set to leave Inter

NETHERLANDS playmaker Wesley Sneijder appears set to leave Inter Milan following a meeting with the club yesterday in an apparent failed attempt to resolve a contract dispute.

"I don't want to talk. Something will come out in the afternoon," Sneijder said upon leaving the meeting with his agent. "I've always been well here."

Sneijder has been sidelined for two months with injury but has now returned to fitness.

Inter caused a stir last month when club director Marco Branca said Sneijder wouldn't play again until he made a decision about his future with a new deal reportedly requiring him to take a pay cut.

Last week, global footballers' union FIFPro highlighted Sneijder's recent exclusion and called for talks about clubs using "blackmail behavior" to force players into signing new contracts.

Sneijder, who has two years remaining on his current deal, is the highest earner at Inter with a salary of about 6 million euros (US$7.8 million) annually.

The 28-year-old Dutchman, who last played for Inter in September, has long been linked with a move to the Premier League. Manchester United came close to signing the playmaker in the 2011 offseason.

In 2010, under then-Inter coach Jose Mourinho, Sneijder helped Inter to a treble with the Serie A, Italian Cup and Champions League titles. However, current coach Andrea Stramaccioni has succeeded with a three-pronged attack of Rodrigo Palacio, Antonio Cassano and Diego Milito. Sneijder also helped the Netherlands to the 2010 World Cup final.

Stramaccioni refuted suggestions on Sunday he had been carrying out a directive from club president Massimo Moratti.

"It was nothing to do with the president. It was my choice," said Stramaccioni. "There are players in better form than him (Sneijder) and it's my job to put the best team together."

On the pitch, an own goal from Palermo defender Santiago Garcia saved Inter's blushes, while both Roma and Lazio claimed precious wins.

Stramaccioni had called on his side to relaunch its campaign after some recent jitters and the pressure was on the host after Napoli had cemented second place earlier with a 5-1 rout of Pescara.

Despite creating a number of scoring chances the Nerazzurri failed to find a way through the visitors' defence until Garcia stuck his leg out and deflected Andrea Ranocchia's cross past his own goalkeeper in the 74th minute to hand Inter the win.

"We weren't at our best but the team were persistent and kept plugging away," said Stramaccioni.

After its 10th win in 15 games Inter remains third on 31 points, two shy of Napoli and four adrift of Juventus following the Turin giant's 3-0 rout of Torino on Saturday.

Palermo slipped to fourth from bottom and coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who lasted only five games before being sacked as Inter coach last season, said: "We gifted them the goal. It's a pity because we had a decent game."
