Soccer chief withdraws confessions in court
XIE Yalong, former deputy director of the Chinese Football Association, withdrew his confessions and denied most of the bribery and match-fixing accusations in court this morning, claiming that his earlier confessions were extorted by torture.
Xie told the Intermediate People's Court of Dandong City in northeast China's Liaoning Province that most of his confessions were made under torture and appealed the court to ignore the materials obtained with illegal means.
Xie is facing 12 charges of bribery totaling 1.72 million yuan (US$272,500).
The court did not make the sentence yesterday.
The 56-year-old football official said he suffered electric shocks, slaps and threats on his family during interrogation and had to confess to crimes in order to live.
Xie said his family was not allowed to visit him and he had to make it to the court to let his family know the truth.
Meanwhile, former national football team leader and CFA official Wei Shaohui was also tried this morning in the country's biggest soccer scandal.
Wei faced 15 accusations involving more than 1 million yuan of bribes. Like Xie, Wei denied 14 of the charges in court.
Their trials continued this afternoon.
