Soccer referee took 810,000 yuan in bribes

Lu Jun, who earned the title of "Golden Whistle" several times, stood in court this morning to answer questions about his role in China's soccer corruption.

Lu was accused of taking bribes of 810,000 yuan (US$128,061) to rig seven matches between 1999 and 2003, according to the Intermediate People's Court of Dandong in northeastern Liaoning Province.

Lu allegedly received 710,000 yuan from soccer clubs to help them win and receive another 100,000 yuan to act as a middleman, the court heard. The trial was covered by CCTV.

The veteran referee was found to have received 350,000 yuan to help Shanghai Shenhua win the 2003 Derby against Shanghai International while another Chinese referee Zhang Jianqian acted as the middleman, receiving the same amount.

The court heard that Shanghai Shenhua also paid 4.8 million yuan to bribe other referees. Other clubs guilty of bribery included Shandong Luneng, Shenyang Huachen Jinke.

The trial is still ongoing.
