Spain tries to stay upbeat after defeat
A DAY after a shock loss to Japan which put a dent in their Olympic gold medal chances, Spanish players hoped to use the opening ceremony to get their minds off the defeat and focus for their next match against Honduras.
Spain's under-23 team left Glasgow for London to join up with the rest of Spain's Olympic athletes after losing 0-1 on Thursday. The result threatens the country's attempt to simultaneously hold the World Cup, European Championship and Olympic titles.
Also on Thursday, Brazil held on for a 3-2 victory over Egypt and Britain had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Senegal. Medal contender Uruguay fought back to down the United Arab Emirates 2-1. Gabon rallied for a 1-1 draw against Switzerland and Mexico escaped with a 0-0 draw with South Korea. Belarus beat New Zealand 1-0.
Spain midfielder Oriol Romeu admitted the team is irritated by the defeat, but is confident it will bounce back against Honduras. "It will do us good to rest and return to our best, so we can beat Honduras," Romeu said. "We more than anyone believe in ourselves."
If the Olympic side has any hope of winning a medal, it will have to try to repeat the national team's record at the 2010 World Cup, when it lost its first match but went on to win the tournament.
