Spurs end 23-year Old Trafford drought
TOTTENHAM ended 23 years of hurt with a 3-2 victory over Manchester United in the English Premier League on Saturday for the north London side's first win at Old Trafford since 1989.
Spurs had not beaten United anywhere since 2001 but wasted little time in showing their intent on this occasion when defender Jan Vertonghen struck a Gareth Bale pass into the bottom left corner of the goal in the second minute.
Bale doubled the advantage in the 32nd with his first goal of the season. Bale took a pass from Mousa Dembele near the center circle and made a diagonal run through the United half to his right before shooting across goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard into the bottom left corner.
Nani pulled one back from a Wayne Rooney cross soon after the second half began to start a flurry of three goals in three minutes.
Clint Dempsey restored Spurs' two-goal lead a minute later in the 52nd when he tucked in the rebound from a Lindegaard save of a Bale strike, but Shinji Kagawa immediately cut the visitors' lead to 3-2.
"It was a roller coaster, up and down," said Dempsey, whose first goal for Spurs earned the team a third straight win and left it in fifth place - a point behind the Manchester clubs. "But we ground out a result and showed a lot of character."
Tottenham endured a torrid half hour to end the match as goalkeeper Brad Friedel made a string of saves to preserve the win.
"It was quite a game," Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said. "The first half we never started, didn't get into the game. From there we were just playing against the wind."
