Spurs go fourth, Ramsey has surgery

TOTTENHAM Hotspur survived a second-half fightback by Everton to secure a 2-1 home win that took it back to fourth place in the English Premier League yesterday.

Roman Pavlyuchenko, who had scored twice in each of his last two games, put Spurs ahead when he turned in a Jermain Defoe cross after 11 minutes.

With fullback Gareth Bale rampaging forward like an old-time winger, Spurs were in complete control and they took a deserved 2-0 lead after 28 minutes with a brilliant chip by Luka Modric at White Hart Lane.

The game changed five minutes into the second half though when Tottenham lost impressive midfielder Tom Huddlestone and Everton began to take command.

It pulled a goal back after 53 minutes when Ayegbeni Yakubu cashed in on an error by Heurelho Gomes - the first Spurs had conceded at home in six league games - but the Spurs keeper made amends with good saves to deny Jack Rodwell and Steven Pienaar.

Everton, which came from 0-2 down at home to draw 2-2 with Spurs at Goodison Park in December, should have done the same 12 minutes from time when substitute Landon Donovan missed a sitter.

The Toffees continued to pour forward in the latter stages but Spurs held out for a win that takes them back to fourth place on 49 points, above Manchester City on goal difference. Liverpool, sixth on 45, was hosting Blackburn Rovers later.

Chelsea, shocked 2-4 at home by City on Saturday, leads the way with 61 points, one ahead of Manchester United, which was playing Aston Villa in the League Cup final yesterday.

Arsenal, 3-1 winner at Stoke City, is third on 58 points.

The Gunners confirmed yesterday that midfielder Aaron Ramsey broke two bones in his leg against Stoke.

The 19-year-old Welsh international was injured in a tackle by Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross, who was sent off at Britannia Stadium.

Arsenal issued a statement yesterday, saying Ramsey fractured the tibia and fibula in his right leg and had surgery on Saturday evening after Arsenal's victory. The club ruled Ramsey out for the rest of the season.

Arsenal said the operation was a success but it is too soon to state an exact time-scale for recovery.

Shawcross was sent off and left the pitch in tears after seeing the extent of Ramsey's injury.

"We are not protected enough. We are sometimes victims," Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas said.

But Shawcross insisted that there was "absolutely no malice in the challenge."

"I am deeply upset that Aaron has suffered such a bad injury and my thoughts are with him," Shawcross said. "I would like to send him my best wishes too for a speedy recovery."

After the match, Shawcross was called up to the England squad for the first time with Fabio Capello naming the center back for Wednesday's friendly against Egypt.

Elsewhere on Saturday, bottom-place Portsmouth beat Burnley 2-1 one day after becoming the first Premier League club to be forced to seek bankruptcy protection. Bolton Wanderers climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City kept its European hopes alive by beating Wigan Athletic by the same score.
