Spurs go fourth after sinking Swansea

JAN Vertonghen lashed home a second-half winner as Tottenham Hotspur beat Swansea City 1-0 in the English Premier League yesterday to move back into the Champions League positions.

The Belgium center back latched onto a right-wing free kick from Kyle Walker and sent a low shot into the corner in the 75th minute, breaking Swansea's stubborn resistance that was threatening to frustrate Spurs at White Hart Lane.

The victory lifted Andre Villas-Boas' side above Everton into fourth position - where Tottenham finished last season - and level on 29 points with third-place Chelsea.

The negative for Tottenham was the sight of Emmanuel Adebayor hobbling off five minutes before Vertonghen's first league goal, with an apparent right leg injury.

On Saturday, Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney were on target for Manchester United as the league leader swept aside Sunderland 3-1 at Old Trafford to stay six points clear of champion Manchester City.

United was 2-0 up after 19 minutes, van Persie opening the scoring with a left-foot finish from close range for his 12th league goal of the season and Tom Cleverley adding a quickfire second three minutes later. England striker Rooney made it 3-0 in the 59th before substitute Fraizer Campbell pulled one back with a header four minutes after coming on.

United has 42 points to 36 for City, which defeated Newcastle United 3-1 at St James' Park earlier in the day.

Elsewhere, Queens Park Rangers celebrated their first win of the season after beating west London rival Fulham 2-1 thanks to two-goal Adel Taarabt to end a record run of 16 matches without a win and move off the foot of the table. The victory stopped QPR, still five points from safety, becoming the first top-flight team since Bolton Wanderers in 1902-03 to fail to win any of its opening 17 games.
